'Notes on Flavians'

This is a alternate version of the 'Singing Stones' piece from earlier this year. It was going up in a gallery along with the rest of my show and I wasn't happy with the original product. I think this one has a lot more atmosphere.

Pen, with digital additions and touch-up. 'Red Lights Over the Factory Planet'

May submission for the monthly challenge on the Creature Design Workshop Discord server. Here's the write-up:

“Watch out for shooting stars, they’ve got teeth.”
- Linesman, Sect. 1306

The ugly heart of industry, this planet is a crawling expanse of massive factories, power plants, macro-scale farming facilities, and much, much more. Thick smog blankets the sky in a perpetual state of twilight. Only the faintest traces of sunlight reach the surface so the unfortunates working the endless mazes of machinery and steel must rely on poorly-maintained electric lighting to see by. Sadly, there are other forms of illumination.

The workers have many names for them–‘Cutterfish’, ‘the Snacka’, ‘Red Rockets’, to name a few. They can be spotted, if you’re lucky, by the glowing red lights of their five stomachs which are bright enough to shine through both their skin and the smoke at once. These organs process the flammable gasses produced by the factories after they are sucked through natural vents on their fins and trunk where they are converted to a powerful fuel. This fuel ignites almost immediately and is directed out six hollow, fin-like appendages, producing significant thrust. Through the flexing of powerful muscles they can adjust the output, allowing them to hover, coast, or speed forward with incredible velocity.

Carnivores, their diet mostly consists of the animals they can steal from the factory farm sectors and the many workers who have no choice but to brave the exteriors of their metal fortresses. Massive jaws with appropriately razor-like teeth, large jagged blades jutting from the bottoms and tops, and a dextrous tail tipped with what is essentially a harpoon. Coupled with the creatures’ speed and ferocity, just glimpsing the red lights overhead could mean imminent death. 'A Balloon for Anja'

An updated version of 'Balloon 1' down below. Anja refers to the protagonist's grandaughter, who passed away shortly before the events of the story.

Pencil with digital touch-up and coloring. 'Gift of Guilt'

A moment in the early life of Etchi, an alien swordsman who had to leave his family, his home, and eventually his planet on a quest to free his people from hellish servitude. This illustration depicts when he must go from the village in order to hone his skills, taking the longsword of his father and saying goodbye to his mother. He will never see them again.

May be part of a bigger story along the road, really like the concept.

Pen, colored digitally later. 'Goji, Trickster Frog Spirit'

Of the many spirits made manifest by the rainforest peoples, Goji is among the most mercurial. Roaming the high treetops, the giant frog utters guttural croaks that can be heard from miles away. Golden life energy pools from its expanded vocal sac and is teased out by six small appendages around the sides.

These small drops drift on the wind until coming to a rest in the ground or a riverbed, whereupon they will give birth to a variety of fresh, delectable fruits. Be wary however, not all of them are meant for mortal mouths. Some spirits are not as benevolent as they appear. Digital. This was created for a monthly contest in the Creature Design Workshop Discord. 'Ark of Man'

An ancient hermit sees a vision of a future where the Earth is dying, but also a possible escape. He goes through a terrible ritual and takes on the weight of his entire tribe and their lifespans. A couple thousand years later he and others like him have added even more lives to their mass, and converge upon the site of an opening portal created by the scientists of an alternate Earth.

'Everything had gone smoothly, according to plan. Miraculously it seemed that travel between Earths had been achieved without a hitch.

But when the portal opened, what greeted us was a dying landscape of red stone and ruins. We stood shocked and paralyzed by the sight. So it was that no one closed the gate before the first of the creatures got in.

It seemed a massive worm, at it's head a skeletal figure twice the height of a man. It's torso a mass of flesh and skin stretched over a macabre cargo. It reared up, it's jaw unhinging to produce an all too human, ululating melody that entranced the onlookers. It was echoed by a host of other distant cries, as behind the beast were many more just like it approaching the portal. Each one's 'body' extending so far into the horizon that there seemed to be no end.

We could only watch in horror as the creature bent over the nearest researcher--she stood stock still, eyes wide but unable to move--and began swallowing her from the head down.

That haunting melody never faltered.'

Mixture of pen and digital media, submitted to monthly contest held in the Creature Design Workshop Discord. 'Layover Front Cover'

May not be the final version, but this is currently the working cover and title for my graphic novel, which is slated to release whenever I finally get my act together and finish it. Outline and first draft are complete, as of writing I'm working on finalizing lineart and dialogue, coloring as I go. Around 80 pages right now, but I expect that to change as I make more progress. I may post more work on the site soon.

Digital. 'Caterwaul the Single-Mind'

'A lean human shape uncurls from beneath a scraggle of scrub brush, nude but for a helm of bone and steel, their skin a copper green and eyes bright with curiosity. Their name is Caterwaul Single-Mind, and they are a mage unlike any other.

Let their exploits be known here in this record: Twelve seasons past, in the month of Gallows, they killed their master, the Toiling Man, who named them Caterwaul with his final breath. For five seasons more they wandered without purpose until they were confronted by the mage known as Giant. The two warred for several seasons and made great destruction with their work until at last Giant was slain. From their enemy’s skull a great helm was wrought with arcane metallurgy, one that would ward young Caterwaul against mental invasion. For this feat they became known as the Single-Mind. What time has passed since then is inconsequential.'

This is an excerpt from a story I've been writing off and on (are you sensing a theme). The working title is 'Mageland', named after the barren wasteland it's set in. Kind of a Mad Max style world but centered around wizards mixing magic and tech together, then going bonkers. Not supposed to be a comic for once, but I thought having some illustrations as chapter headers would be fun if I ever finish the damn thing.

Regular pen for the line work, brush pens for color, plus some pastels for the smoke. 'Stingin' Pete'

Also part of the 'Mageland' story. Pete is a very powerful mage who has kept a remnant of sanity despite burning his body and mind with magical energy. He draws the power through numerous metal antennae embedded in his skin and along the spined, blade-like wand of steel. He has a large territory in the wastes, travelers should beware.

Pen/brush pens again, with some light digital coloring to the rocks and bones he's standing on. 'Minstrel of Ill Fate'

Jaunty yet woeful notes come from afar, foretelling great strife.
I was going for kind of a Dark Souls-esque theme here.

Pencil, digital touch-up. 'Finishing Touches'

I was doing a lot of random little pieces in my sketchbooks while working the night shift. This one stuck out to me.

Chisel-tip pen. 'Spun!'

Just all over the place.

Pen. 'Stretched'

Near to breaking.

Pen. 'Shaved'

Little off the top.

Pen. 'There's a Distance'

I have a lot more pieces from 2022, just been trying to sort through the backlog.

Chisel-tip pen. 'Respite'

Practicing my hatching, I like how it makes me slow down.

Pen. 'A Red Thing'

Separate, but still technically part of the 'Knot' series. I was doing a whole thing with humanoid forms made of tons of overlapping contour lines. I may post the original image at some point, since this was edited for print.

Pen, with digital alteration afterwards for the white on red effect. 'Barnacles'

Creepy dude covered in barnacles. I was trying some stuff with different tools.

Bamboo ink brush.
